Teaching curling in schools

Portland’s Evergreen Curling Club is working actively to introduce the next generation of curlers to the Olympic sport.

ECC members Arnie Iwanick and Joe Petsche recently brought something a little different to the physical education program at Oak Creek and Westridge elementary schools in Lake Oswego. With their brooms and other curling gear—notably four stones and specially-made caster dollies—the gym floor became an Olympic venue for a couple of hours.

After showing a short video and explaining the equipment, Iwanick and Petsche gave a short demonstration of how to throw the stone and sweep. Then it was the kids turn to try.
