Rev. Jesse Jackson is surrounded by supporters and reporters at a press conference Feb. 16 at Maranatha Church in Northeast Portland. Jackson visited the Rose City in response to the police shooting of Aaron Campbell in January.
Rev. Jesse Jackson made an appearance in Portland tonight in response to the recent shooting of Aaron Campbell by Portland police. Jackson’s visit to the Rose City brought loads of media attention to the case of the man, who was suicidally distraught after his brother’s death the same day.
The officer who shot the unarmed man was cleared of any wrongdoing and is expected to return to work with a new assignment tomorrow. The grand jury was critical of the Bureau, however.
After a brief press conference, Jackson spoke to a standing-room-only crowd of more than 1200 at Maranatha Church in Northeast Portland. Here is a quick edit of my photos.

I think this is a sad situation. For both the family of the man that was killed, and evidently his brother who died earlier. But why did he run from the police in the first place? I am frustrated when people say it was related to race. If the police have to chase you because they think you have stollen a car, then taser you in an attempt to gain control of an already bad situation, and on and on like it this case. It doesn’t matter what your race is. This whole awful situation could have been stopped in the beginning if he would have pulled his car over. Now a life is lost, a family greives, and a police officer who did his job the way he was trained is going to have to live with this for the rest of his life. It is just sad all around. Police officers do not want to kill people, no matter what their race.
P.S. Matthew, I know you just took the pictures, but I had to say something.
